In a Restfully Fixed Position

I have been asked “Why do you close your writings with “In Him, DeDe” What is the ‘In Him’ part all about? What a great question. I began using ‘In Him’ years ago following a study of the book of Ephesians. I LOVE Ephesians! Multiple times the lil phrase appears throughout the New Testament, but here in Ephesians Paul uses the small, yet powerful phrase to convey strong meaning. To name just a few: “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.” (1:4) “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” (1:7) “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” (1:13) And one of my favorites, “In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.” (3:12) WOW, I get ALLLL this, the list is vast … In Him.

While looking at this phrase in the verses something potent stood out to me. In the Greek, just like our English language there are elements used to convey a primary thought, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. In the Greek, there are common connecting prepositions ‘on, at, with, by and among.’ As I dug, I found that ‘in’ (‘en’ in the Greek) held a specific defining difference. ‘En’ declares fixed position, with the primary idea of rest. Unlike other Greek prepositions (‘eis, ek’) which implies motion, while ‘en’ remains in place. Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, paints a wonderful picture of our position ‘in’ Christ.

Let’s read that again in context to our verses above, may I be so bold as to paraphrase: “I can rest, knowing that having believed in Him, my position is fixed and remains in place with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” And most assuredly, “Due to my faith in Him and position that remains in place, I may approach God with freedom and confidence.”

Remember when we were children and for Mothers Day, our teacher would place our hand on a rolled out pile of wet clay, that pressed hand print now forever etched. THAT is what we are ‘In Him.’ As one whom believes in my heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and confessed with my mouth that Jesus is Lord, then I am forever pressed into Him. As the verses say above, I am chosen, redeemed, forgiven, marked, sealed and free to approach my God with confidence. Can I get a HARDY Amen! “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” – 2 Cor 1:20 Does this mean that life is rosey and smells of vanilla fields all the time. No! No matter how stormy, or swirly life is around me, I am still found in Him. Like the lil pressed clay hand print, I am most definately fixed in my position as a Daughter of the King.
