Hosting the Presence of One

This weekend we met with our ladies for one last (official) women’s breakfast before we ran into summer. Our goal for the morning was a 3-letter word, “FUN.” Having a Hawaiian theme, gals came decked out in bright floral attire, island music playing in the background, leis and funky glasses were worn, there was even sand thrown on the tables (before the food was presented mind you). A colorful beach ball was tossed around with fun questions to answer aloud to the group when caught, (I.e.) “What was your worst hair cut?”  Yes, fun was had by all.  But there was more.

We slowed down for a brief moment to consider one thing before we jetted out into multiple directions. I shared with the women, now that summer is here with all the activity, travel, schedules, and busyness it brings—comes gatherings with family and friends.

Hospitality is more than entertaining guests or preparing a perfect home. In Scripture, hospitality is about being generous and making room for people—in our homes, our schedules, and our hearts.

Paul wrote,“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people” (Galatians 6:10). In Proverbs, “A generous person will prosper; he who refreshes will himself be refreshed (11:25). Being hospitable blesses both the giver and receiver.

It doesn’t require wealth, perfection, or a spotless house (although it does aid in whirlwind cleanup activity). Sometimes the greatest act of hospitality is a listening ear. Going for coffee or lunch, offering an encouraging word, or simply making someone feel included.

True hospitality does not begin at the front door of our home—it begins in the presence of God.

Before we can genuinely welcome others, we must first spend time with the One who welcomes us. May we intentionally make time to be with Jesus first—hosting the Presence of One.

We didn’t stop there. We arranged a craft of making one coffee coaster (just one) representing their time with God. I encouraged them, if they don’t drink coffee or tea, to light a candle. Set the moment.

Among the laughter and the constant buzz of conversation there were beautiful coasters made, each unique and creative. I sensed anticipation of its use to come.

As we spend time in His presence and allow Him to renew us, may He lead us to open not only our homes but also our hearts, extending His love and grace to those around us.

First, hosting the Presence of One.
